Summer Soul Jam Sizzles

Compton’s signature Summer Soul Jam concert drew more than 6,000 to the Compton Par 3 Golf Course Saturday Aug. 16 with a sizzling R&B lineup including Anthony Hamilton, Jody Watley, Tarsha', Charlie Wilson of the Gap Band, Johnny Gill, J. Anthony Brown, Holly Robinson-Peete, Tisha Campbell-Martin, Barbara Morrison and the Blues Mamas and the Sai Whatt Band. Director, producer and musician extraordinaire Ricky Minor was also on hand, adding a special touch to the fourth annual event. During the six-hour show, tribute was paid to three of the community’s recently fallen stars who passed: Bernie Mac, Isaac Hayes and Bo Taylor. Next month, the city’s annual Gospel Fest is set to draw an equally large crowd. —Photo by Ms. Shon of D’Angelo’s
