Governor Urges UC Regents to Consider Four-year Program at Drew University
Assemblyman, university president to make presentation at next Board of Regents meeting

As the University of California (UC) Board of Regents prepares for its upcoming meeting this month, the governor last week urged the body to take the necessary steps to assist in Charles R. Drew University in becoming a four-year institution.

During the three-day meeting, UC Provost Rory Hume is slated to make a presentation on the UC’s long-term expansion plans for its medical schools and health service and education programs.

At that same meeting, Drew President Dr. Susan Kelly and Assemblyman Mervyn Dymally, D-Compton, will make a presentation on the future direction of the university of medicine and science which currently offers a two-year academic program in the areas of medicine as well as science and health, located in Watts-Willowbrook.

In a letter dated Oct. 25 addressed to Board of Regents Chair Gerald L. Parsky, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger encouraged the body to “carefully consider” Kelly and Dymally’s presentation and their request to develop a strategy to expand to a four-year program.

“For Drew University to move forward to attract and retain top academic physicians and continue to serve their students and community, they need to be allowed to develop a plan over time to expand to a four-year program,” the letter reads.

“As the medical needs of California’s underserved populations continue to grow, Drew University is on the front lines in educating the doctors and nurses from diverse backgrounds desperately needed to help us meet these needs.”

Such an expansion, said Schwarzenegger, would be consistent with the UC’s plan to increase the number and diversity of medical students.

In a valuable partnership, Drew students currently spend their first two years in UCLA’s medical school program for basic science coursework.

Dymally in a statement praised Schwarzenegger’s support.

“Over the past several weeks, I have met with the governor to discuss changing Drew from a two-year program into a four-year program,” said Dymally. “The governor agrees that this is a step in the right direction for Drew and he assured me that we have his support.”

Drew was founded in 1966 in response to the lack of adequate medical services available to the surrounding South Los Angeles communities. It did not become a university until 1987, when it was renamed after Dr. Charles R. Drew, a renowned Africa-American physician hailed for his groundbreaking work in blood preservation.

The school is dedicated to eliminating health disparities by providing access to and delivery of healthcare services to underserved populations.

The Board of Regents will meet Nov. 14-16.
