New Long Beach Target Hires 180 on the Spot
Unemployed residents attend hiring event en masse

More than 800 locals braved heat and long lines on Aug. 15 and 16 for a chance to land a job with North Long Beach’s newest big-box retailer.

In conjunction with Target, Compton’s CareerLink WorkSource Center sponsored the hiring fair at the center’s Bullis Road location.

Hundreds of job seekers showed up to fill out applications and complete a prescreening interview with Target associates.

According to CareerLink staffer Reginald Allen, 180 of the 810 applicants were offered jobs. Those who accepted were given an on-the-spot drug test. Once the test results return and the potential employees pass a background check, they will be formally hired, he said.

The new Target store will open in October 2008.

Target operates approximately 1,500 stores in 47 states.

The event marked the second time Target partnered with the city to provide residents with employment opportunities. In 2007 it offered jobs to more than 300 residents at hiring fairs preceding the grand opening of the Target store in Gateway Towne Center.

Recent statistics position the state’s escalating unemployment rate at 7.1 percent. Though Compton’s economy is growing stronger daily thanks in part to a recently secured Enterprise Zone, the city has one of the highest poverty rates in the county.

According to statistical data provided by the federal government, one out of three Compton citizens lives below the poverty line. Additionally, the city’s unemployment rates are much higher than the national average.

CareerLink, which is open Monday through Friday, provides a range of free services for job seekers. Visitors can construct resumes and have them critiqued, attend workshops on filling out job applications, participate in mock interviews and learn how to dress and “sell” themselves when applying for a job.
