500 Foster Youth Go Fishing
Annual Fishing in the City event exposes deserving youth to the wonderful experience of fishing

From staff reports

LOS ANGELES COUNTY – Supervisor Yvonne B. Burke recently hosted over 500 homeless youth and children in Los Angeles County’s foster care system at her final 2nd District “Fishing in the City” event at Kenneth Hahn State Park.

The event, which began 13 years ago hosting approximately 100 youth from the Nickerson Gardens and Imperial Courts housing developments, has become an annual effort to expose deserving youth to the wonderful experience of fishing. Each year, the L.A. County Fish and Game Commission and the California State Fish and Game Department fully stock the lake with catfish and provide all the fishing poles, as well.

Nearly 250 adult volunteers were on hand to chaperone the youth, including the Boy Scouts of America, who assisted in baiting hooks, casting lines and cleaning and cooking the catch of the day. In addition to a day in the park, the youth were also familiarized with park etiquette and the need for conservation.

Community and corporate partners for this year’s event included the County of Los Angeles; Plains Exploration & Production Company (PXP), who provided lunch for the youth and volunteers; Pacific American Vol-unteer Association; Supe-rior Warehouse; Warehouse Shoe Sale; California American Water; Ralph’s Grocery Stores; Smart & Final; Nabors Well Services Co; Coastal Paintworks; Western Unified Bakery; and Hansen’s Beverage Company.
