Lueders Park Gymnasium To Be Re-floored

By Allison Jean Eaton
Bulletin Staff Writer

The Compton City Council last week approved a resolution authorizing the renovation of the gymnasium floor at Lueder’s Park.

According to the staff report, in 2005, a structural concrete leak severely damaged the floor of the gymnasium of the park located at 1500 E. Rosecrans Ave.

The damage is so bad that the entire hardwood floor must be replaced.

“The floor ... got damaged during the rainy season the winter before last,” said City Manager Barbara Kilroy. “When the contractors got in there and investigated, they determined that the underfloor had also been damaged.

“It meant that they had to take the floor down, essentially down all the way down to the earth and start over again,” she continued.

The city first acknowledged in September 2005 — more than a year ago — that the floor needed to be replaced.

“We had some trouble getting a general contractor who wanted to tackle the whole job, and we had to go out to bid a couple of times, and then the bid came in a little higher than we had estimated,” Kilroy explained.

The proposal submitted by Chap Inc., which the city has chosen to do the re-flooring, comes at a cost of $281,120 and will cover the demolition of the existing floor, waterproofing the exterior of the west wall of the gymnasium, concrete pouring, installation of a Robbins Sports Surfaces Perma-Cushion system maple floor and the painting of a logo and game lines.

A total of $193,417 will be reallocated from the city’s fiscal year 2005-06 Community Development Block Grant carryover funds to assist in paying for the job, according to the staff report.

“I know the citizens have really been waiting, and asking and are concerned about this project,” said 2nd District Councilwoman Lillie Dobson.

Kilroy said that Chap Inc. is ready to start the work and estimates the new floor will be finished by Jan. 1. Work is slated to begin sometime in mid-November, she said.
