Man Guilty of Double Murder Sentenced to Life
By
Bulletin Staff Writer
A Compton man convicted of two counts of first degree murder in
the slaying of a Riverside woman and her soon-to-be sister-in-law in
front of the woman’s 5-year-old daughter was sentenced to two consecutive
life sentences last Monday.
Phillip Oville, 27, was recently found guilty of gunning down 26-year-old
Michelle Robidoux and her 15-year-old sister Katie Brennan in Robidoux’s
Riverside Home June 24, 2003 as her 5-year-old little girl looked on.
Both victims were shot in the head.
According to prosecutors, a drug dealer who knew Oville had moved
out of the residence the day before the murders, and Oville was there
earlier in the day to purchase marijuana, which he admitted.
But prosecutors say Oville and an accomplice cased the home and
killed the women during a burglary, which was committed when the suspects
knew only the victims and the child were in the home.
Robidoux was engaged to Sean Brennan, owner of the home, Katie’s
brother and the father of the girl. Now 8 years old, she testified as
a witness. Prosecutors credit her testimony as what swayed the jury.
But Deputy Public Defender Richard Verlato said his client had
left the house “a good deal of time before the murders occurred.
Katie and Michelle were safe and sound when Phillip Oville left.”
He also cited the girl’s inability to pick Oville out of a line-up
and that the description Kevin Brennan gave of how Oville looked on the
day of the murders differed from the girl’s description of the
killers.
The second suspect in the case has yet to be identified.
Oville could have been sentenced to death.
