Beauty Contest Moves to 2nd District
By
Allison Jean Eaton
Bulletin Editor
COMPTON – The
deadline is nearing for nominations for the Beautification Recognition
Award program in the 2nd District.
The Beautification Committee kicked off the contest July 1. The deadline
for submissions is Aug. 31.
“We don’t have much time left to win, but we’re looking
for everyone to win in the 2nd District,” said 2nd District Councilwoman
Lillie Dobson. “You cannot lose this because it helps everybody
do good.”
The committee, which formed last year to spearhead beautification activities
in the Hub City, launched the contest last fall in an attempt to reward
residents and businesses that keep their properties in tip-top shape
and to encourage others to follow suit.
Awards given are for the most outstanding or most improved property
in the district, with 1st and 2nd place winners announced.
Anyone citywide can nominate one or more properties, but those locations
must be located within the 2nd District. Eligible properties, according
to information supplied by the committee, include homes as well as
commercial and community properties.
Committee member Paulette Conley said the contest is about “having
some pride in your community and in your home.”
“We want to make sure that all the neighborhoods look wonderful,
beautiful,” she
said.
Suggested measures residents can take to spruce up their homes include
planting flowers and taking care of their lawns.
“Making sure that the front of your house looks good,” Conley
said. “We want everyone to get involved in it, not only because
we’re doing a contest, but because it is your home.”
Winners receive a decorative sign to post in their yard in addition
to a commendation from the city. Additionally, the selected property
owners will be featured in The Bulletin and on Channel 36. Previous
winners have also been given $250 and $100 gift cards to The Home Depot.
Entry forms are available online at www.comptoncity.org; in the City
Clerk’s office at City Hall, located at 205 S. Willowbrook Ave.;
or by calling the City Clerk’s office at (310) 605-5530.
Once the applications are turned in, judging will take place. Winners
should be announced sometime in September.
“We’re gonna be watchin’ and ridin’ around,” Dobson
said. “Let’s paint. Let’s fix. Let’s cut. Let’s
do whatever we need to do to get the 2nd District in order.”
The contest, which rotates from district to district, began in the
3rd District and most recently was held in the 1st District.
